Giovanni Lanni was born in Montreal, Quebec and has resided there for most of his life. He received a bachelor of arts in 2015, from Concordia University, majoring in Fine Arts photography.
Giovanni has spent the past several years traveling throughout Canada, Africa and Europe. From working as a welder in Alberta’s oil sands to teaching math and english to primary school children in Kenya and most recently living in Southern Denmark fishing and farming while interning for Magnum photographer Jacob Aue Sobol. Often carrying one of his many cameras, Giovanni has always used photography as a tool for discovery. Well for this series the more appropriate term would be re-discovery.
Giovanni currently is under lockdown back home in Montreal.
Everything until now and From now on.
This series, “Everything until now and From now on.”, was primarily shot in Onsevig, a small town on the southern edge of Denmark. It explores Giovanni’s recent life crisis — the unexpected loss of his father. Using his camera, Giovanni tries to sort through these emotions. He explores ideas such as loss, grief, and loneliness, and makes discoveries that catch him by surprise like celebration, love, and re-discovery of self.
Giovanni continues to use photography as a way to discover and is now revisiting images from his archive while considering the themes of family and tradition.
