The Boys
After two old friends died unexpectedly, I spent the next year and a half photographing our remaining group of a dozen men. Now in our 66th year, we have been close since early childhood. I collected vintage photos that tell the story of this shared history and use them to introduce each individual as they are today. With a view camera and natural light, I searched for what connects the boy to the man. I mix text with images to plumb the waters of memory, loss, friendship, and mortality as we reach the threshold of old age. As I made final edits for a book, yet another of The Boys died. We are now eleven.
